Workshop description: Editing is a wonderful stage of our story’s development. It is when we see the first/earlier drafts really begin to shine, with the plot, its threads and the overall delivery taking shape in the best possible way.

Though a vital part of the process, the mechanics of editing often appear to be veiled in mystery, and, dare I say it, can be considered by some to be a chore. However, for our writing to reach its potential and be well-received, we simply must become familiar with editing techniques.

And there’s no better quote to underline this than Michael Crichton’s: “Books aren’t written - they’re rewritten”, meaning it’s via the process of rewriting and editing that our initial drafts enrichen, mature, streamline and evolve into the finished article.

Over the years, I have come to love the process, for, via a number of easy-to-apply techniques, we really do see our stories evolve into the rich and compelling reading experiences we wish them to be.

Whether you have completed your first draft or are looking to learn the editing fundamentals to improve your writing, this workshop will give you solid techniques to apply, in addition to vital tips and tricks to really make your writing sparkle.

Writing is all about the ‘reader experience’, and we must keep that firmly in mind to deliver our stories in the clearest, easiest and most seamless way for our reader to enjoy to the max. And in this workshop, you will learn tried and tested industry techniques to take your writing to the next level.

Held in the iconic and wonderfully-inspirational setting of Bath Central Library, this workshop is ideal for writers of all abilities, including beginners, and is suitable for all genres, and writers of both novels and short stories.

Workshop format:

From the comprehensive worksheets and group interaction, we’ll practice the afore-mentioned editing techniques via writing exercises to give you insight into how to hone, polish and ignite your scenes and chapters, no matter the genre, content and stage of development of your plot.

And from these techniques, used by professional editors, you will quickly see the aspects of writing that can be streamlined, trimmed and enhanced to give your work that bestseller sheen, making you an even better writer off the bat, so to speak.

Workshop goal: to dispel the myths and mysteries of editing and give you solid techniques to utilise and be an even better writer. All students will leave with an advanced understanding of the editing process. And I guarantee - by the end of the workshop, you will love editing just as I do.

“Dominic is an excellent coach, focusing on the bigger editorial picture and the small details that have definitely improved my work. Thoroughly recommend.” Viv, Brighton
